I finally learned how to use the washing machine properly. Completely

Dry it completely. Once the drawer was clean, I let it dry completely before putting it back.

Afterwards, the drawer looked brand new, and for the first time in months, my clothes smelled fresh and were truly clean.

Understanding compartments

While cleaning was helpful, the real insight came when I understood the function of each compartment.

Most linen drawers have three separate compartments, each with its own symbol or label:

“I” – Prewash compartment: Used for heavily soiled clothes or long prewash cycles.

“II” – Main wash compartment: Put your usual liquid or powder detergent here. It is released during the main wash.

Flower or star symbol: This compartment is for fabric softener, dyes or fragrance enhancers. These products are released during the final rinse.

Like many other people, I poured the detergent directly into the drum, which prevented it from being distributed properly throughout the machine. Pouring it into the detergent dispenser evenly distributes it, ensuring that the detergent reaches every fiber of the laundry at the right time.

Common mistake: overcharging.

It can be tempting to add a little more detergent, especially if your clothes are very dirty, but this is one of the worst things you can do. Overfilling the dispensers can cause clogging, leaks, and insufficient rinsing. It can also leave a sticky residue on your clothes.

Instead, follow the maximum fill line inside the drawer. This small adjustment can significantly improve washing results.

Results:

After following these tips, the difference was undeniable. My clothes were softer, shinier, and smelled better. Even my previously scratchy towels were soft again.

I also realized how much of a strain this was putting on my washing machine. Since the residue wasn’t blocking the flow of detergent, it ran quieter and more efficiently.

Now I thoroughly clean the detergent dispenser every two to three weeks. It takes less than ten minutes and my washing machine looks brand new.

A little attention can make a big difference

If your clothes aren’t as fresh as they used to be, there’s no need to rush out for detergent or blame your washing machine. Just open the detergent dispenser, clean it thoroughly, and you’ll see the difference.

It’s one of those little life lessons that, once learned, changes everything, the kind that makes you wonder how you ever lived without them.
