I finally learned how to use the washing machine properly. Completely

For years, I thought I knew how to do laundry. Like most people, I loaded the washing machine, added detergent, pressed a few buttons, and walked out. But no matter what brand of detergent I used, my clothes often ended up faded, scratched, or with that faint, musty smell that never went away.

I only recently discovered something surprising: the problem wasn’t with the detergent, the washing machine, or the water, it was with me. More specifically, the problem was the way I was using the detergent dispenser.

A hidden problem that most of us ignore.

Over time, a thick layer of residue can build up in this drawer: soap scum, fabric softener residue, and even mold if the area remains damp. When this happens, your washing machine won’t rinse or wash properly, and your clothes won’t be fresher.

I thought a damp cloth would be enough. But it wasn’t. The dirt that had built up beneath the surface was slowly ruining my clothes and preventing the washing machine from working properly.

First step: thorough cleaning.

Cleaning the laundry drawer turned out to be much easier than I expected, and the difference was immediately noticeable.

Here’s what I did:

I took the drawer out completely. Most washing machines have a small release tab in the middle. Gently press down and pull the drawer out.

Soak in hot water. I filled the sink with hot, soapy water and let the drawer soak for about 15 minutes. This helped loosen any dried-on residue that had built up over the years.

Scrub every nook and cranny thoroughly. I used a toothbrush and mild detergent to scrub the edges, crevices, and small passages where the water and detergent flow. The water and vinegar mixture worked great on stubborn stains.

Clean the inside of the drawer. Before I put the drawer back in, I also cleaned the inside of the washing machine where it is located. This area also accumulates dirt and often gives off a musty smell if left unchecked.
