The choice between sclerotherapy and surgery depends on the severity of venous insufficiency and the size of the vein. ”  Sclerotherapy can be used when the vein is less than 4 mm. If it is larger than 5 mm, there is a high risk of discoloration and side effects, so surgery is preferred,  ” explains the angiologist.

Venous insufficiency: how to prevent it?

”  You can prevent venous insufficiency by adopting a healthy lifestyle and adopting certain daily habits  ,” explains Dr. Salloum. He particularly recommends physical activity such as cycling, swimming, or walking. ”  However, some sports, such as tennis or basketball, should be avoided due to the increased strain on the legs,  ” he adds. Other activities can also help.

  • Be careful about being overweight
  • At the end of the day, elevate your legs using a pillow to facilitate venous return, and sleep with a pillow under your feet.
  • Don’t wear pants that are too tight.
  • Wearing wide heels, 2–3 cm high, promotes venous return.
  • Avoid exposure to heat, as it promotes vein dilation. Therefore, avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and sun exposure.
  • Quitting smoking.
  • When symptoms occur, using cold water 2-3 times a day will shrink the veins, while heat will dilate them.
  • Wear compression stockings if you sit or stand a lot, even if you don’t have varicose veins.
