If you feel pain in the lower right side of your abdomen, it may indicate a problem with your appendix, such as appendicitis or, less commonly, appendix cancer.
You have several large organs in the upper right abdomen, including the liver, right kidney, and gallbladder. Serious causes of pain in this area include:
Hepatitis, including alcoholic hepatitis, toxic hepatitis, viral hepatitis, metabolic hepatitis, and autoimmune hepatitis
Gallstones Liver
disease, including liver cancer
Gallbladder cancer
Inflammation of the gallbladder, called cholecystitis Kidney infection
Kidney
stones
Duodenal ulcer
Colon obstruction
When to call a doctor for abdominal pain
If abdominal pain is severe, persists, or keeps coming back, talk to your doctor. Call 911 immediately if abdominal pain is caused by a recent injury or chest pain.
You should also contact your doctor as soon as possible if the pain is accompanied by other symptoms, such as:
Inability to keep food down for more than 2 days
Signs of dehydration, including infrequent urination, dark urine, and intense thirst
Inability to have a bowel movement, especially if vomiting is also present
Pain when urinating or a frequent need to urinate
Also call your doctor if:
The abdomen is sensitive to touch.
The pain lasts longer than a few hours.
There may be other symptoms that may indicate a problem within the body that requires immediate treatment.
See a doctor immediately if you experience abdominal pain and:
You vomit blood
You notice bloody or black, tarry stools
You have difficulty breathing
You vomit constantly
You have abdominal bloating
You have yellow skin
You are pregnant
You have unexplained weight loss
