What is abdominal pain?
Abdominal pain refers to discomfort or unpleasant sensations felt in the abdominal area. Almost everyone experiences abdominal pain at some point.
Most causes of abdominal pain are nothing to worry about, and your doctor can easily diagnose and treat the problem. However, sometimes your doctor may detect a serious condition that requires medical attention.
Abdominal pain on the left side
The location of abdominal pain can indicate its cause. If the pain occurs in the lower left side of the abdomen, the most common cause is diverticulitis. This is a complication of diverticulosis, a condition in which small pockets form in the lining of the intestines. As these pockets become inflamed (a condition called diverticulitis), you are likely to experience severe abdominal pain. Irritable bowel syndrome can also cause pain in the lower left side of the abdomen.
